Salivary Hormone Testing
Salivary hormone testing is a very useful test for uncovering hormone imbalances.
Steroid hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol and DHEA all play a vital role in maintaining our good health. As we age, various hormones levels change and fluctuate which can result in hormonal imbalances.
Uncovering the exact hormonal imbalance is key to guiding an appropriate treatment plan. Saliva collection is painless and extremely convenient allowing for multiple collections during the day, which helps to determine hormone variations in a 24 hour period.
The conventional approach to testing hormones is to test blood hormones. This approach tests hormones levels that have not yet been delivered to tissues. Testing salivary hormones looks at hormones that have passed into the saliva from the cell membranes of the salivary gland. This means that salivary hormones look at hormones that have been delivered to tissues and have acted on the tissue giving us a more accurate measurement of hormone activity within the body.
Various hormone panels are available.
- Female panel (testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, DHEA and cortisol)
- Male panel (testosterone, estrogen DHEA and cortisol)
- 4 point cortisol curve (cortisol measured at 4 points during the day)
- Month-long Assessment (estrogen and progesterone measured throughout a month)
