Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is one of the oldest forms of healing and dates back in medical texts to 4000 years ago. Massage involves working and acting on the body with pressure to help improve function and promote relaxation. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments, skin, fascia or other connective tissues.

Depending on your reason for coming in, the goals of your massage therapy treatments may be to reduce stress, relieve pain, improve physical function or range of motion, increase circulation as well as to develop, maintain or promote well being. Swedish massage, hydrotherapy, stretching, trigger point therapy and joint mobilizations are just a few of the techniques that may be used during a massage treatment.

Swedish massage, in particular, can by characterized by five styles of strokes/techniques used to massage. The five groupings of strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading; used the most throughout the treatment), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking. The term “Swedish” massage is only recognized in English or Dutch speaking countries. In all other countries, it is simply referred to as “classic massage”
