Dr. Lei Gu ND

Naturopathic Doctor

After working in the pharmaceutical industry for a year after graduating from the University of Toronto, I decided to go back to school to pursue my passion in healthcare. I graduated from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, and have been in practice for over 16 years.

I began working with cancer patients providing them with supportive naturopathic care in 2014. Working with this patient population has been, and continues to be the most rewarding and humbling experience for me as a clinician. I have had the opportunity to work with patients not typically seen at naturopathic practices.

This allowed me to see limitations of both conventional as well as naturopathic approaches; to achieve the best possible outcome, an integrative approach is necessary. For this reason, I take an integrative approach to care for all my patients.

I encountered patient after patient who felt that supportive care for cancer patients after the completion of their active treatments (surgery/chemo/radiation) is very much lacking. They often felt lost with where to go with the many questions they have about how to manage lingering side effects of the cancer treatments, how to prevent a recurrence and long-term surveillance.

Over the years, I have developed a new level of appreciation for the importance of disease prevention. Cancer patients without co-morbidities such as diabetes and obesity, tend to heal more quickly from surgery, have better quality of life and longer survival.I have also noticed that so much research is focused on cancer treatment, which is an absolute necessity. However it is often forgotten that up to half of cancers are preventable. As the saying goes: “ an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

Lastly, I have witnessed many female patients prioritize their loved ones and careers over their own well-being, sometimes even whilst managing (their own) serious health issues including cancer.

For the above reasons, in addition to providing supportive care for my cancer patients, I am also passionate about providing care for women, especially women in their peri-menopause/post-menopause stages of life. This is because peri-menopause is a critical point in a woman life that when managed and supported well, risk of a wide range of health issues can be significantly reduced.

I strongly believe that when the woman of the household enjoys good health and quality of life, her entire family benefits.

I look forward to helping you achieve the best possible outcome with your health goals.
